3 Epic Jorge Masvidal Next Fight Scenarios as Nate Diaz Rumors Swirl

News

  • Nate Diaz has hinted at retirement.
  • Diaz was set to seek revenge for UFC 244 during a future rematch with Jorge Masvidal.
  • If Diaz does call it quits, Masvidal could square off in his next fight against Colby Covington, Kamaru Usman, or Canelo Alvarez.

UFC “Baddest Mother F*cker” (BMF) belt contender Nate Diaz hinted at walking away from the Mixed Martial Arts fight game. The news, which came Thursday via Instagram, rocked fans who were expecting a rerun of the Nate Diaz vs. Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal fight.

Nate Diaz Retirement Rumors Spread in Wake of UFC 244

Diaz later clapped back at the retirement rumors he created, but his future’s anything but certain after what happened in his loss to Masvidal at UFC 244.

The fight ended in a doctor stoppage resulting from a cut above Diaz’s eye, and his subsequent comments weren’t the first time that he had decided to take a break from competitive fighting.

Prior to UFC 241, he had been on the sidelines since August 2016 when he lost to “The Notorious” Conor McGregor by majority decision.

So where does this leave Jorge Masvidal?

3 Potential Next Fights for Jorge Masvidal

Masvidal’s UFC 244 victory cemented his status as one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC welterweight division, where he’s ranked third behind Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley.

In July, he became the first person in the UFC to hand Ben Askren a loss with a brutal flying knee. The fight was over in a record five seconds.

Everyone wants to see a rematch of the Diaz-Masvidal BMF fight, which brought together two fascinating fighters with a bit of street-cred.

But if Diaz does retire, it seems Masvidal could struggle to find a compelling opponent with a significant draw and fanbase. Here are three epic options for his next fight.

1. Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is the most obvious choice for MMA fans, but UFC President Dana White has shot down this exciting possibility.

Masvidal claims there’s a reason why the UFC won’t let him fight McGregor:

The president (Dana White) said we can’t compete because I’m too much man. He’s not going to allow that to happen.

2. Colby Covington

With the Irishman out of the picture, Colby Covington is next in consideration. But Gamebred is not too keen on handing his nemesis a UFC fight since that would be giving him unnecessary shine.

According to a recent revelation, he’s been looking to settle their feud away from the octagon, saying,

I go where he (Colby Covington) eats and wait for him. He doesn’t eat at these places no more.

He has, however, expressed interest in stepping in for Covington or Kamaru Usman if either of them misses the UFC 245 bout for unforeseen reasons. As long as the paycheck’s large enough, anyway.

3. Canelo Alvarez

One competitor who Masvidal does want to challenge is Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez silenced critics last Saturday after violently knocking out Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO title. He is a top pound-for-pound boxer and boasts belts in four fight-divisions.

According to Jorge’s trainer,

Canelo is the guy who interests him (Masvidal) the most, he’s the biggest star but also boxing was Jorge’s first love.

In his post-fight press conference, Masvidal said that he was open to fighting Canelo:

If Canelo wants to get his a** kicked, that’s a fight I’ll take.

But judging by Nate Diaz’s latest posts on social media, UFC fans might get that tantalizing rematch after all.
